On Day 15 of the Paris Olympics 2024, India’s campaign came to a close with a total of six medals. The final day saw the exit of golfers Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar, who both finished outside the top ten in their respective events.
Earlier in the games, India’s performance had been highlighted by Manu Bhaker, who secured two bronze medals—one in mixed team shooting and another in an individual event. Shooter Swapnil Kusale also added to the tally with a bronze. Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion, earned a silver medal in his event, while the men’s hockey team claimed a bronze by defeating Spain.
Saturday’s events, however, brought some disappointments. Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar wrapped up their Olympic campaigns without making it into the top ten. Wrestler Reetika Hooda faced a tough quarter-final match against Kyrgyzstan’s Alperi Medet, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Unfortunately for Reetika, Medet advanced due to scoring the last point, and her subsequent loss in the semi-finals eliminated Reetika from repechage contention.
In other developments, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) delayed its decision on Vinesh Phogat’s joint-silver medal verdict, pushing the announcement to August 13. Vinesh Phogat, who announced her retirement from wrestling on Friday, has been awaiting the outcome of this ruling.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach addressed the situation in a press conference, stating that the IOC would accept whatever decision CAS makes. He emphasized that the regulations of the International Federation, United World Wrestling, must be followed. “If you ask generally about having two silver medals in one category, then my answer is no,” Bach said. He went on to explain the challenges of making such decisions, noting that “Now it’s in CAS, and we will ultimately follow the CAS’ decision. But again, the International Federation has to apply and interpret their rules. So this is their responsibility.”
